Kaolin clay, or kaolinite, derives its name from Gaoling, a small village in China’s Jiangxi Province, which is known for its fine Jingdezhen porcelain. It is also known as China clay and is white in color, although it can also come in hues of orange, red and pink, owing to its iron oxide concentration. Kaolinite is a common mineral and is mined in many parts of the world.
Kaolin clay has been used in skincare for centuries. It is rich in minerals that have skin-benefiting properties and is the most gentle of all clays, making it great for face mask, hair and body cleansing.
